Jabal al-Nūr (Mountain of Light)

Significance

The mountain crowning the cave, rising about 640 metres. It was named "Mountain of Light" for the light of Revelation with which Allah illumined the earth. The ascent is difficult, taking around an hour, and the path is narrow. "Jabal al-Nūr" is a later name; the early generations knew it simply as "Mount Ḥirāʾ."
