The Place of Taḥannuth

A feature within · Cave of Hira

Significance

Before prophethood, the Prophet ﷺ would seclude himself in the cave of Ḥirāʾ in worship — what the Arabs called "taḥannuth" — for numbered nights, taking provisions, then returning to Khadīja for more, until the Truth suddenly came upon him. This retreat for reflection was a divine preparation for the Revelation.

The recommended practice

It is not from the Sunna to strain oneself climbing up to worship here — the Companions and Rightly-Guided Caliphs did not do so after the prophethood.
