Their Disobedience and the Turn of the Battle
A feature within · Mount of the Archers
Significance
When the archers saw the Muslims winning and gathering the spoils, they disagreed: some said, "Let us join our brothers"; others said, "We stay as the Prophet ﷺ ordered." Most descended, and their commander ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jubayr held with a small band — about ten — who were all killed. Khālid ibn al-Walīd, with the polytheists' cavalry, swept around the hill from behind, and the reverse ensued. Allah revealed: {And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them by His permission, until when you weakened and disputed the order} [Āl ʿImrān: 152].
The recommended practice
The great lesson: obedience to the commander is not measured by apparent benefit, but by carrying out his order — private judgement in the face of the text is a deficiency in obedience.
