The Pledge of Riḍwān

Significance

In the sixth year of the Hijra, after Quraysh had blocked the Prophet ﷺ from ʿumra at al-Ḥudaybiya, he sent ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān ﭬ to them; his return was delayed, and word reached the Muslims that he had been killed. The Prophet ﷺ summoned his Companions to pledge under a samura tree — one thousand four hundred pledged to him ﭬ upon death — or not to flee. Allah revealed regarding them: {Allah was truly pleased with the believers when they pledged to you under the tree} [al-Fatḥ: 18]. So it is called "the Pledge of Riḍwān."
