The Mosque of Ḍirār

Significance

The hypocrites of Madīna built a mosque in Qubāʾ to make it a place of scheming against Islam and a base for Abū ʿĀmir the Impious. As the Prophet ﷺ set out for Tabūk they asked him to pray in it, and he promised to do so on his return. On the return, at Dhū Awān near Madīna, Allah revealed: {And those who took a mosque for causing harm, disbelief, division among the believers, and as a station for whoever had warred against Allah and His Messenger before} [al-Tawba: 107]. The Prophet ﷺ sent men to demolish and burn it. This narrative is among the greatest proofs on the intention behind building mosques.
