Significance

A "thaniyya" in Arabic is a high mountain pass. Thaniyat al-Wadāʿ lies north of Madīna on the road to al-Shām, so named because travellers were bidden farewell there. Some scholars mention that the Anṣār used to go out to it to see off travellers. The site today is on the northern edge of Madīna, where urban growth has extended over the centuries.
