Significance
The Prophet ﷺ used to visit al-Baqīʿ and greet its people saying: "Peace be upon you, abode of a believing people. God willing, we are joining you. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you." This is the authentically transmitted formula.
The recommended practice
It is Sunna for men to visit and to supplicate FOR the dead, not through or from them. Nothing is asked of a deceased person, no grave is touched for blessing, no circumambulation around a grave, no slaughter at one. All of that is shirk (associating partners with Allah).
