"Allah Has Looked Upon the People of Badr"

A feature within · Rawḍat Khākh

Significance

The Prophet ﷺ said to Ḥāṭib: "What is this, Ḥāṭib?" He said: "Messenger of Allah, do not judge me hastily. I was a man attached to Quraysh but not of them, and those with you among the Muhājirūn have relatives in Makka by whom they protect their families. I loved — since I lacked that — to secure a hand with them by which they might protect my kin. I did it neither in disbelief nor apostasy." ʿUmar ﭬ said: "Let me strike his neck." The Prophet ﷺ said: "He witnessed Badr — and what do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: 'Do as you wish, for I have forgiven you.'" ʿUmar's ﭬ eyes filled with tears. And Allah revealed the beginning of Sūrat al-Mumtaḥina: {O you who believe, do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies} [al-Mumtaḥina: 1].

The recommended practice

Fiqh of the story: to weigh a man's past record of virtue, to verify before judging a Muslim, and to preserve his dignity if he has an excuse — such was the Prophet's ﷺ dealing with his Companions.
