The Pledge to Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ﭬ

A feature within · Saqīfat Banī Sāʿidah

Significance

On the day the Prophet ﷺ died, the Anṣār gathered in the roofed courtyard (saqīfa) of Banū Sāʿida to consult on the caliphate. Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and Abū ʿUbayda ﭺ went to them. Abū Bakr ﭬ spoke with wisdom and reason, then said to ʿUmar and Abū ʿUbayda: "Extend your hand, I shall pledge to you." ʿUmar ﭬ replied: "No — we pledge to you, for you are our master, our best, and the most beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." ʿUmar pledged, then the Muslims present pledged, and the general pledge took place in the Prophet's Mosque the following day.
